Little Hong Kong feels like it has been here forever, and in a good way! A true neighborhood staple on San Pablo Avenue, sitting in its own standalone building with its own parking lot, which makes it easy. It is family owned and run, and you can feel that in the way the place operates. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, and nothing feels overdone. This is classic Cantonese comfort food. Nothing flashy, just familiar dishes, consistently well made, and come in decently generous portions. It’s the kind of place people return to for years, even decades, because it delivers the same good experience every time. In a time when prices seem to climb everywhere, it still feels reasonable, which adds to the appeal. I have been coming here for years, and it continues to hit that simple mark. Good, honest food in a place that feels like part of the neighborhood.

We’ve been coming to Little Hong Kong for as long as we can remember and our family even longer. This is our go to Chinese spot in the Berkeley area and for good reason, it is fantastic food for a very good price. We frequently order for takeout but there is a dine in option in a spacious inside room. Parking is pretty quick and accessible to find for pickup as well and the food was ready much quicker than we expected. We ordered a bunch of food from stuffed tofu to salt and pepper spare ribs, pork fried rice, chicken and green beans, beef chow fun, and so on… The food is flat out great. Not a single dish was average, all were far above it. The standouts to us were the beef chow fun, just popping with flavor and texture with a very nice sauce layering the noodles bringing it together; and the Singaporean noodle, unreal with bold flavors and the nice chew of the very fine noodles. Again, the food is so good but the price really brings the value to a point where it feels like a must go to recommendation. This spot was filled with locals and natural sunlight when I walked in for lunch. The carpet and wood panel softened conversation and clinking dishware. All of this, combined with the clean white tables, gave the space an impression of a refined hotel breakfast restaurant from the 90s. Though some would say that's a reach. The service was quick, but not rude. I ordered the bitter melon with chicken (presumably not commonly ordered in a spot that serves Chinese American food to a diverse community). Its black bean sauce and stir fry reminded me of something my mom would cook, except better. Don't tell my mom that. Overall I'd love to come back and try all the lunch specials.

This venue was recommended to us, so we decided to give it a try. My husband loved the peeking duck, and stated this is his new favorite Chinese restaurant! We also had the BBQ pork appetizer, chow mein, Mongolian beef, and sweet and sour chicken without veggies. The beef had more onions than meat but had great flavor, and the sweet and sour was just ok. Everyone enjoyed the BBQ pork.

My family has been coming here for literal decades, even when they were located in their previous location further down on San Pablo Ave. My grandparents loved going there when they were still alive and got to know the owner and staff well. Nearly all of the adults' birthdays were spent there. Family doesn't eat out nearly as often these days, but still visits from time to time. We decided to get a large take-out order from here for Christmas dinner this year. I called early in the afternoon for a 5pm pick-up to give them time especially because we were ordering a whole Peking duck. We arrived at 5pm to pick-up the order, but it wasn't ready yet, but they were unsurprisingly VERY busy with a ton of take-out orders and a good handful of parties dining in as well. The staff was doing their best to juggle both take-out orders and those dining in, but the system is old-fashioned with pen and paper. They would probably operate faster and with a little less chaos with some kind of computerized system, but they seem determined to stay with the traditional system.
